Once a year mothers get celebrated for everything they do. It hardly seems fair to have only one day put aside for this, but one day it is and so you are going to want to make it as special as possible. Here are a bunch of ideas for great treats for mom, from fabulous Mother’s Day menus at your favorite restaurants, to dinner parties and cupcakes, there will be something for everyone on May 12th!

The Beehive – South End
This hip restaurant in the South End never misses a beat and for Mother’s Day, prepare yourself for a whole day full of live jazz and delicious food. From 10-4, enjoy special a la carte menu items prepared by chef Rebecca Newell like their coconut carrot coffee cake, eggs shakshuka (a poached egg dish with tomato sauce and polenta). Or go with some of their regular items like their short rib, farmhouse Cheddar, and fontina grilled cheese.

Mother’s Day dinner will also be held at The Beehive from 5-11 p.m. Live blues will take over the performance space and The Beehive’s a la carte dinner menu is featured.

Beacon Hill Bistro – Charles Street
Treat your mother to a prix fix special prepared by Chef Joshua Lewin at Beacon Hill Bistro. From 10 – 4, for $39.00, you can choose from a menu of items featuring all local and seasonal ingredients, think roasted asparagus salad with poached farm egg, brioche French toast and Faroe Island salmon. And save room for the house made desserts: don’t worry about the fullness factor, a walk along Charles street or the Public Gardens are both in the same neighborhood.

Brunch (11 – 2:30) and Dinner (5 – 10) will be served on Mother’s day and Chef William Kovel will be presenting new menu items highlighting spring ingredients and produce.

L’Espalier – Back Bay
L’Espalier, one of Boston’s longest standing fine dining institutions, offers a beautiful Mother’s Day brunch. A three-course prix fix ($85.00) will be available to all guests and a children’s menu will also be available. Brunch will be served from 10:30 – 3:30 and regular dinner resumes from 6 – 8.

dbar, Chef Chris Coombs first restaurant, will be turning out a wonderful, three course prix fix on May 12th. First course offers an array of freshly baked goods – sticky buns, croissants, scones and seasonal fruits. Entrees include traditional brunch dishes like eggs benedict or farm fresh blue aracuna eggs ‘Ranchers' style’ with Mexican spice braised pork shoulder, black beans, green garlic and potato, tortilla and avocado, and crème fraiche. The brunch would be worth it just for that dish! Homemade desserts will round out your meal and have both you and mom leaving with a morning to remember.

Strega – Seaport District
Take in Boston’s beautiful skyline while enjoying an Italian style Mother’s Day brunch. Guests will enjoy a customizable three course prix fix with the option to order a la carte as well. Whatever options you choose for your first and second courses, expect freshly baked ricotta pie and Italian Cannoli to finish off the meal. Can’t be with mom this Mother’s Day? What do you miss about her?

This Mother’s Day, May 10, will likely be a far cry from previous iterations you’ve celebrated in the past. Maybe you’re unable to spend the day with the mother figure in your life because of the coronavirus pandemic. Maybe you’re quarantined with her, but going out to eat is out of the question. Maybe your only plans are to wave at her from your car.

On a day when restaurants normally see mothers and their families flooding their dining rooms, this weekend will be exceptionally quiet. Instead of pouring mimosas for matriarchs, many are offering Mother’s Day brunches and dinner menus for takeout or delivery, to be enjoyed either in-person or sent to your mom across town.

Here are a few options to choose from — note that some require pre-ordering by a certain date.


Silver-sparkled memories on Mother’s Day

I wanted to commemorate Mother’s Day in a personal way. It would be too far to drive to the New Jersey cemetery where my sisters will bring flowers to Mom’s grave. We five sisters reminisce constantly about her, resurrecting memories of vacations and holidays in texted photos. But, instead of flipping through photo albums, I polished my silver.

It’s really our silver, most of it given to me with my mother’s compliment and challenge, “because I know you are the only one who will clean it like me.”

She was right, and I carry out this two-day chore before the major holidays. For us, it was a magical ritual that turned dark gray metal into mostly gleaming silver. Some of these pieces will never be restored to their former glory.

This is not a collection of heirloom sterling, not “the silver” as in place settings. These are quirky hand-me-down objects valued for the memories, not the metal. Many hint of the aspirations of my Italian relatives.

Not everything silver is silver. The frames that celebrate my honeymoon and our son’s school portraits are silver-ish bargains from a familiar home goods store. There’s a fair amount of chrome and pewter in the mix. Brass is banished.

The star of my collection is a heavy rectangular butler’s tray with handles lacking the silverplate. It dominates a narrow table holding a tier of cobalt glass balls. The family’s oral history attributes this find to my Italian great-grandmother, who scoured Depression-era thrift shops in Camden, N.J. A generation closer, my grandmother was the source of the tiniest treasure, a sugar spoon imprinted with the logo of a Caribbean resort. After we returned home from a family vacation, we discovered in horror that Nana had swiped it!

I adore the pieces handed down from “Zizi,” my namesake Aunt Angie. A dented sugar cup monogrammed in script with “De P” (for De Persia) was her wedding gift. We still use a serving tray for holiday dinners, and when not in season, it makes a nifty magazine holder. Although she was the daughter of a sweatshop seamstress and immigrant cabinet maker, she probably displayed them with pride.

From my mother’s own wedding are battered and peeling candlesticks, one repaired at the base with a strip of duct tape. There’s a curvy ice bucket for holiday cards, and a bent candle snuffer. The absolute best item is a funky cocktail shaker with recipes engraved on the top. This quirky design serves me well as a dining room table vase.

I treasure the bud vase (dented, of course) from my husband. There are two tiny baby cups, collectively 130 years old, with handles hanging on with epoxy glue. They remind me of life’s passages. With trinkets handed down through generations, and framed photos going back generations, it’s a mini-family museum.

From my father are two keepsakes: a tiny Paul Revere cup won at a golf tournament and a small tray from a medical colleague in Bombay. Engraved with a hand drill, the script wishes him a happy 60th birthday.

My husband teases me that I talk to myself as I clean. During the most recent silver-a-thon, I rubbed, rinsed, and polished with my inner voice talking to Mom like old times. As I stood by the sink, piling on sheets of newspaper to absorb the mess (her way), she checked on my technique.

“Mom, don’t worry, I have plenty of new rags. I tore up one of Tom’s T-shirts, and have a soft old toothbrush.”

Mom taught me how to gently brush engraved borders. My inner voice is comparing the merits of our silver polish du jour. For decades, we both swore by the pale pink liquid that dried to a haze. That brand was replaced by brief phases of dipping and spraying, finally settling on a non-toxic dark pink cream.

My friend Meg loves old silver, too, and we trade photos at holidays. Not surprisingly, many loathe the time and effort to polish. Our friend Jack confirms that he is the silver polisher in his family, and, “though I can’t say I like doing it, I do like the results.”

This spring, my younger sisters were furiously cleaning one of Mom’s oddest possessions, an ornate centerpiece vase called an “epergne,” for a niece’s wedding. It is more brown than silver, more comical than elegant in design. Where in the world did Mom get this?!

For decades before her death, my mother happily bequeathed her signature possessions. She appointed the papier-maché angels to one sister for holiday wreaths, the farm animal table decorations to the “country” sister, and tablecloths to nieces. The silver was mine (plus a rainbow of turtlenecks). With daughters, granddaughters, and even great-granddaughters, Nonna never doubted finding the right custodian. Having a single millennial son, I doubt my collection will be passed on to him.

Silver-lovers use silver, they don’t store it. During a pandemic dinner last fall, a wobbly candlestick holder graced the backyard table along with hot dogs. From the initial purchase or gifting, to the countless rebirths after polishing, it lives eternal.

Mom and I had some strain in our relationship in her final years. As I rub and brush, I feel like I’m working out the dents and tarnish to restore our love to the better times. I know Mom is nodding, happy in her decision that, “She took care of it.”

Triple Ginger Scones With Chocolate Chunks Connie Miller of CB Creatives

These sweet brunch treats require little planning or effort, and that makes them great choices for treating Mom right on Mother’s Day. Inspired by Polish racuchy, our twist on buckwheat pancakes balances warm spices such as allspice and cinnamon with tart Granny Smith apples and lemon. For an update on a classic scone, we use ginger three ways — powdered, freshly grated, and candied — to make a tender pastry studded with chocolate chunks. Or for an even simpler, more versatile approach, consider our baked sesame-oat crumble, which goes just as well on tangy yogurt as it does on a vanilla ice cream sundae.

Triple Ginger Scones With Chocolate Chunks

These rich, flavor-packed oversized scones are the creation of Briana Holt of Tandem Coffee + Bakery in Portland, Maine. Ginger in three different forms — ground, fresh, and crystallized — gives these breakfast pastries plenty of kick, as does black pepper. Keep both the butter and buttermilk in the refrigerator until you’re ready to use them so they stay as cold as possible, which makes the dough easier to handle. Holt recommends serving the scones after they’ve cooled to room temperature, but we also love them warm, while the chocolate is soft and melty.

Don’t worry if the flour-butter mixture doesn’t form a cohesive dough immediately after all the buttermilk has been added. It will be very crumbly, but a brief kneading and the act of shaping and pressing the mixture into disks will bring it together. When kneading, though, take care not to overwork the dough, which will result in tough, not tender, scones.

3½ cups (455 grams) all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting

5 tablespoons (67 grams) white sugar

4 teaspoons baking powder

2 tablespoons ground ginger

1½ teaspoons grated nutmeg

1½ teaspoons ground black pepper

2 tablespoons finely grated fresh ginger

1 tablespoon grated orange zest

18 tablespoons (2 sticks plus 2 tablespoons) salted butter, cut into ½-inch pieces and chilled

1 cup (150 grams) roughly chopped bittersweet chocolate

1 cup (154 grams) finely chopped crystallized ginger

Heat the oven to 375 degrees with racks in the upper- and lower-middle positions. Line 2 rimmed baking sheets with kitchen parchment. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, ground ginger, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. In a 2-cup liquid measuring cup or a small bowl, stir together the buttermilk, grated ginger, and orange zest.

To a food processor, add about ½ of the flour mixture and scatter the butter over the top. Pulse until the butter is in large pea-sized pieces, 10 to 12 pulses. Transfer to the bowl with the remaining flour mixture. Add the chocolate and crystallized ginger, then toss with your hands until evenly combined. Pour in about ‚ of the buttermilk mixture and toss just a few times with your hands, making sure to scrape along the bottom of the bowl, until the liquid is absorbed. Add the remaining buttermilk in 2 more additions, tossing after each. After the final addition of buttermilk, toss until no dry, floury bits remain. The mixture will be quite crumbly and will not form a cohesive dough.

Lightly dust the counter with flour, turn the mixture out onto it, then give it a final toss. Divide it into 2 even piles, gathering each into a mound, then very briefly knead each mound it’s fine if the mixture is still somewhat crumbly. Gather each mound into a ball, then press firmly into a cohesive 5-inch disk about 1½ inches thick. Brush the tops of each disk lightly with beaten egg. Using a chef’s knife, cut each disk in half, then cut each half into 3 wedges. Place 6 wedges on each prepared baking sheet, spaced evenly apart.

Bake until the scones are deep golden brown, 27 to 30 minutes, switching and rotating the baking sheets halfway through. Cool the baking sheets on wire racks for 5 minutes, then transfer scones directly to a rack and cool for at least another 5 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Buckwheat Apple Pancakes Connie Miller of CB Creatives

Buckwheat Apple Pancakes

Inspired by a traditional Polish snack, these apple-studded pancakes get rich flavor from buckwheat flour, warm spices, sour cream, and a good dose of vanilla. We like them made with tart Granny Smith apples, but if you prefer a combination of tart and sweet, use a mix of Granny Smiths and Golden Delicious. We macerate the apples with sugar, lemon juice, and cinnamon to boost flavor. And instead of mixing the apples into the batter, we mimic a blueberry pancake technique, scattering the cubed apple into the pancakes just after they’re poured onto the skillet. Press gently on the apple pieces after scattering them on the batter you want to embed the fruit without deflating the pancakes.

Apples should not be prepped in advance the fruit will discolor if left to stand. Dry the drained apples well to keep the pancakes from becoming soggy.

3 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and cut into rough ¼-inch cubes (3 cups)

5 tablespoons white sugar, divided

2 teaspoons cinnamon, divided

1½ cups (195 grams) all-purpose flour

½ cup (70 grams) buckwheat flour

2½ teaspoons baking powder

2 tablespoons vanilla extract

Grape-seed or other neutral oil, for cooking

Heat the oven to 350 degrees with a rack in the middle position. Set a wire rack on a rimmed baking sheet. In a medium bowl, stir together the apples, lemon juice, 1 tablespoon of the white sugar, and ½ teaspoon of the cinnamon. Set aside.

In a second medium bowl, whisk together both flours, the baking powder, salt, allspice, the remaining 1½ teaspoons cinnamon, and the remaining 4 tablespoons white sugar. In a third medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, ½ cup of the sour cream, and the vanilla. Add the milk mixture to the flour mixture and whisk just until the batter is evenly moistened do not overmix.

Drain the apples and transfer to a paper towel-lined plate discard the liquid. Using additional paper towels, press the apples to dry as much as possible return to the bowl.

Heat a 12-inch nonstick skillet over medium-low heat until hot, 3 to 4 minutes. Add ½ teaspoon of the oil to the skillet, then use a wad of paper towels to spread it into an even film, wiping out any excess. Using 2 heaping tablespoons of batter per pancake, form 3 pancakes in the pan, using the back of a spoon to spread each into a 4-inch round. Working quickly, scatter about 1 heaping tablespoon of apple cubes onto each and gently press into the batter.

Cook until the edges begin to look set and the bottoms are golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes lower the heat if they brown too quickly. Using a wide spatula, flip each pancake and cook until the second sides are well browned, another 1 to 2 minutes. Transfer the pancakes apple-side down to the wire rack. Repeat with the remaining batter, coating the skillet with oil for each batch.

Place the baking sheet with the pancakes in the oven and heat until warmed through, about 5 minutes. Transfer to plates. Put a spoonful of powdered sugar in a fine mesh strainer and lightly dust the pancakes. Serve warm, with the remaining ½ cup sour cream on the side.

Sesame-Oat Crumble Connie Miller of CB Creatives

Sprinkle this baked topping on yogurt for breakfast, on ice cream for dessert, or on any sweet to which you’d like to add nutty flavor and crunchy texture. If you prefer, instead of pumpkin seeds, use raw sunflower seeds or chopped nuts. And if you can’t find black sesame seeds, simply increase the white sesame seeds to 3 tablespoons.

As always with tahini, be sure to stir well before measuring to reincorporate the oil that separates to the top.

Go easy when stirring the crumble as it bakes. A gentle hand will preserve the nubby, clumpy texture that makes the treat so appealing.

The crumble will stay fresh in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days.

¼ teaspoon toasted sesame oil

¾ cup (98 grams) all-purpose flour

½ cup (43 grams) old-fashioned rolled oats

6 tablespoons (82 grams) packed light brown sugar

2 tablespoons (23 grams) pumpkin seeds

1½ tablespoons (13 grams) black sesame seeds

1½ tablespoons (13 grams) white sesame seeds

6 tablespoons (¾ stick) salted butter, cut into ¼-inch cubes and chilled

Heat the oven to 350 degrees with a rack in the middle position. Line a rimmed baking sheet with kitchen parchment.

In a small bowl, whisk together the tahini, vanilla, and sesame oil. Set aside.

In a large bowl, stir together the flour, oats, sugar, pumpkin seeds, both sesame seeds, and the salt. Scatter the butter over it and, using your fingertips, rub the butter into it until it resembles wet sand and holds together when pinched. Drizzle with the tahini mixture, then fold with a rubber spatula until combined and the mixture forms marble-sized clumps smaller and larger bits are fine.

Spread the mixture in an even layer on the prepared sheet. Bake until the crumble is golden brown, 25 to 30 minutes, using a metal spatula to scrape up and flip the mixture 2 or 3 times during baking. Let cool to room temperature.


Lemon Tart

A truly simple lemony spring tart to celebrate Mother’s Day. You can bake the tart a day ahead of time. Serve topped with strawberry slices and a dusting of confectioners’ sugar. You’ll need an 8 x 8 x 2 inch tart pan with a removable bottom.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • ¼ cup confectioners’ sugar
  • ½ cup butter, softened and cut into small pieces
  • 2 eggs
  • ¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons grated lemon zest
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar
  • Fresh strawberries, cut into slices or your favorite berry

Instructions

  1. Make the crust: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Set aside the tart pan with a removable bottom.
  2. The kids can help with this step: In a medium bowl, mix the flour and the confectioners’ sugar. Add the butter and, using your hands or a pastry cutter, mix well until the butter breaks down and is the size of peas. Press the crust into the tart pan (it will appear dry and crumbly which is fine) with your hands, building up a 1/2-inch edge up the sides. Bake on the middle shelf for 20 minutes.
  3. Let the kids help mix the batter: Meanwhile, in a large bowl, beat the eggs with a whisk or electric mixer. Add the sugar, baking powder, salt, lemon zest and lemon juice and beat until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes.
  4. Pour the mixture into the hot crust and bake for another 25 minutes. If the tart starts to brown, cover it loosely with a piece of aluminum foil. The tart is done when no indentations appear when lightly touched in the center. Remove the tart and cool. Just before serving, let the kids sift confectioners’ sugar on top of the cooled tart and surround with the strawberry slices.
