Halloween can be a diet disaster for even the most dedicated health-conscious folk around. As it is quickly approaching, your homes may slowly be turning into a candyland. Halloween is a fun holiday for all; from ghosts and goblins, to sacks of candy arriving home from little ones. Indulging in some of these bite-sized treats is nearly synonymous with the holiday. However, while the candy piles high so do the empty wrappers of the mindless little chocolate bars you have just downed. As a nutritionist, I certainly am not recommending to take away your candy, however, you may be amazed at how quickly consuming these little treats can get out of control.(Photos courtesy of Shutterstock.com)

The average 8 to 12 year old child arrives home with approximately 7 pounds of candy. The amount of sugar in this sack is equivalent to eating 10 cups of sugar, 475 cubes of sugar, or 47 cans of pop. This total does not take into consideration the amount of fat, which also equates to five sticks of butter. Combined, that totals a mere 14,000 calories! It is no wonder Halloween haunts your waistline like the NHL does the NHLPA.

Did you know that average adult eats 15 pieces of small candy per day after Halloween? This is equivalent to 950 calories consisting of 28 sugar cubes and one third stick of butter daily! It only takes four days of this habit for you to pack on 1 pound of pure fat. It would take the average adult six hours of running to rid 1 pound of this mindless weight gain.

Interestingly, it often does not feel like we may be eating this much, because we tend to constantly pick throughout the day: at work, at home, and after the kids are in bed! Chocolate and candy are comfort foods and are very hard to resist. With a few simple strategies, we can all enjoy the festivity without expanding our waistline to resemble the Pillsbury Doughboy.

The #1 Halloween Candy Mistake You're Making

Filling up a sack of candy while trick-or-treating is every kid's dream, and apparently, it is their parents' too. According to a poll from Morning Consult and the National Confectioners Association, 79% of parents say they take Halloween treats from their kids. It may seem harmless, but making this candy mistake adds unneeded calories, sugar, and fat to your diet.

It's well-known that sugar can cause things like obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and a slew of other health risks. If almost 80% of all parents do take some of their kid's candy, that's a lot of people consuming toxic treats. The survey finds that these parents swipe a few pieces, but that 31% of all adults are planning on stashing away more of their favorite candy for later. The American Heart Association recommends women eat less than 32 grams of sugar a day and men less than 36 grams. So say you swipe a Butterfinger after the kids are asleep. One bar not only has 250 calories, but it has 10 grams of fat and 21 grams of sugar. One Snickers bar also has 250 calories but contains 12 grams of fat and 28 grams of sugar along with that. Eating these suddenly adds 500 calories, over 20 grams of fat, and over 40 grams of sugar to your day. Just one 3 Musketeers bar gives you almost the same amount of sugar as those two. It also puts both women and men over the daily recommended limit.

It's not just the regular-sized bars and bags that will do you in. You may be inclined to take a few more mini pieces since they are smaller and seem healthier… But snack and fun-sized treats contain just as much of the harmful ingredients as their full-sized counterparts.

The One Halloween Candy You Should Never Eat

It's safe to say the best part of Halloween has always been the candy. Yes, getting to dress up as someone else for the night is fun too, but it's the fact that you always knew you had a pillowcase full of candy to devour was the true highlight. And even once your trick-or-treating days were behind you, it was very hard not to just mindlessly munching on candy from the bowl you had ready for those costumed kiddos. But not all Halloween candy is innocent. (No matter how small they are!) In fact, there is one Halloween candy that you're much better not eating if you can avoid it.

So what's the one Halloween candy you should never bother eating? Well, great ready because this reveal is going to hurt your heart a bit when you uncover what's actually the worst Halloween candy…

Reese's Peanut Butter Cups

We hate to admit it, but it's important you know the truth. Reese's Peanut Butter Cups are simply dangerous. So why is that? It all comes down to that pesky sugar.

See, one serving of the snack size Reese's costs you 160 calories, 9 grams of fat, and 16 grams of sugar. That serving size? It's just two cups. And don't think those festive pumpkin-shaped Reese's are any better—they're just as bad, coming in at 170 calories for just one, and that same 16 grams of sugar.

You want to keep in mind that The American Heart Association recommends women eat no more than 32 grams of sugar a day and men should stick to 36 grams. The problem with these mini candies is that it's often impossible to stick to the serving size. Soon enough, you look down and see four or five wrappers in front of you, and you've just wiped out all of your allotted sugar for the day.

What's the big deal when it comes to sugar you may ask? Added sugar is a the big problem. See, there is tons of research that links to sugar and weight gain, and consuming so much added sugar often can make it difficult to lose weight. One study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition also found that the one food associated with the highest energy density—which means the most with weight gain—was chocolate bars. These little milk-chocolate snacks could be part of the reason why you're not losing that unwanted weight! Plus, added sugar can negatively impact your skin, leading to breakouts, affect your mood, and disrupt your sleeping patterns. Big yikes.

When it comes to Reese's, all but 1 gram of the total sugar is actually added sugar. It's one of the most popular Halloween candies out there and a poll from the Morning Consult and the National Confectioners Association even found 79% of parents say they do, in fact, take some Halloween treats from their kids' bag of loot. We all know how hard it is to actually stick to a serving size, so perhaps it's best to just leave the Reese's alone this year. Or indulge in just one mini-sized cup. If you can control yourself, that is!


6 Tricks To Save Your Waistline This Halloween

Whether you are handing out candy or hitting a costume party, there are a bunch of neat tricks you can employ to keep Halloween from being a junk food fest.

Whether it’s a late hearty lunch, or a solid early dinner, make sure you fill up on nutritious food before the little ghosts and goblins start to arrive. Everyone’s schedule is different, but make time to fill up on good stuff before you hand out sweets. Make sure you have had plenty of water to drink throughout the day, and you’ve had a solid meal with plenty of fat and protein.

Who doesn’t love a nice bright smile? The timing is perfect right after dinner! Bleaching your teeth can take up to an hour, and there’s no way to eat with that tray in. You’ll definitely save yourself from an hour’s worth of snacking that you’ll only regret later. Just think, your teeth will be better than ever without the candy-induced damage that they would have suffered, and instead, they get a nice polish and shine!

There are a lot of really tasty sugar-free chewing gums available these days. If you need something sweet on Halloween, pick something that will last and keep you busy. Whether you’re rocking out to Monster Mash or handing out candy to the neighborhood kids, gum is a better option than candy every time.

If you participate in trick or treating, you have to bring something sugary into your house. And that’s tough because the temptation is just to eat it one piece after another. One option is to hand out gag candy like pepper gum or wax lips. Hey, it is trick or treat, right? There are a few brands of jelly beans which sell gross flavors that you know you won’t want to eat.

If that’s not your style, you could opt to give away little toys (think dollar store). With dietary restrictions and food allergies being as widespread as they are in kids these days, there are plenty of trick or treaters who can’t eat most regular candy either.

Finally, if you’re that traditionalist who simply has to hand out candy, pick a variety that you just don’t like. Seriously. Look at the display of candy in the store and pick the one which is the least appetizing to you, and hand out that. Kids are kids, and candy is candy they won’t care. You need to be able to take whatever is leftover to work or just throw it out, so pick something you don’t like.

These costume tricks will work whether you’re answering the doorbell, or hitting the costume party. First off, masks, heavy makeup, and vampire teeth make it very hard to gorge on goodies. So if you like to dress up, go all out! No one will know who you are, and you won’t want to bother spoiling the effect for whatever junk food is on the table.

Bulky gloves work well, too. Things like werewolf gloves, lobster claws, or (my favorite) boxing gloves all help to make your costume awesome, but also get in the way of extensive snacking. Freddy Krueger looks pretty slim and it’s no wonder look at his hands!

Finally, pick something tight or slinky to wear. If you’re done up in a tight-fitting costume, you’ll be less likely to spend the night at the snack table. Go for the cat costume instead of the pumpkin.

Some neighborhoods get really involved in the pageantry around Halloween, setting up haunted neighborhoods and things like that maybe they need an extra zombie? Do something other than look at that bowl of candy. This could be running the light and sounds for one of those more involved trick or treating experiences. If you’re doing that, someone else will be handing out the candy, and you’ll be busy scaring the horns off all those little kids!

Finally, there is no law requiring you to participate in trick or treating. Maybe you go out to a movie, or meet up with a friend for some shopping? There is nothing wrong with shutting the lights off and doing anything else that you might enjoy on a Tuesday night. This year, Halloween is a work night for most people, so there’s no reason you have to disrupt your regular schedule if you don’t want to.

If you do decide to hand out candy, try some of these tricks to stay on track. Leftover candy? No problem. Get more generous as the night goes on, or, if trick or treating ends and you still have candy, just throw it out. Don’t let it stay in your house, because the longer it’s there, the more likely you’ll eat it.

7 Creative Ways to Use Your Leftover Halloween Candy

It's the day after Halloween and we have way too much candy in the house. Waaaay too much candy.

Between the kids' haul from trick or treating to the leftover candy we didn't get to give away, we have a small mountain on the kitchen table. There's no way we can, or even want to eat it all.

You can't bring it to work because everyone else brought their extra candy to work. Your waistline doesn't need to collect on the "Mommy or Daddy Tax" from the candy haul.

You don't want to throw it out but you certainly don't want to urge your kids to eat more candy, so it doesn't go to waste. That won't win you any Mom-of-the-Year awards. So, what should you do with the leftover candy?

Use the candy to have some fun. Have your kids build with the candy as if they were building blocks. My kids love to build structures using the jelly, butter and sugar packets on restaurant tables, so why not do the same at home. See who can build the tallest candy tower. Have your toddlers play games sorting the candy into sizes, colors or exact matches. Have them work on counting with the candy making groups of fives or tens.

2. Craft with it

Store the candy away for a few weeks and then use it to decorate a gingerbread house. Don't want to wait until Christmas? Make a Halloween or Thanksgiving themed candy house. If you don't have the gingerbread pieces, just glue the candy onto a shoebox. M&Ms, hard candy, Smarties, and jelly beans make the best gingerbread decorations. Alphamom.com has some cute ideas for crafting with leftover Halloween candy like making an advent calendar or a turkey piñata.

Thekitchn.com created a round-up of cool recipes using leftover Halloween candy. Some recipes are family-friendly like Peppermint Patty Brownies but some sound like fun for Mom and Dad, like Skittles Flavored Vodka.

You don't want your kids to eat all of the candy they collect but you also don't want them to feel like you are taking away their hard earned prize. So, have them exchange it. My daughter has Type 1 diabetes so we started the tradition of the Pumpkin Fairy who comes on Halloween night and exchanges the candy for little gifts such as a craft kit, book or toy. We tell her she can eat whatever she wants and trade the rest, but she eats hardly any because she wants a bigger stash to trade in. Get the candy out of the house by donating it. There are quite a few organizations that accept candy donations. Operation Gratitude sends care packages to the troops overseas. Make sure you have your child include a letter of support to a soldier. According to Operation Gratitude, that's what the soldiers love most. Some libraries and dentists will collect the candy on behalf of Operation Gratitude to make it easy for you. Otherwise call your local nursing home, food pantry, woman's shelter or even children's hospital ward to see if they accept candy donations.

6. Or, donate it to science

7. Ring in the Holidays

Girlfriendology.com has some great advice on what to do with your leftover Halloween candy but the idea I liked most was to create a countdown to Christmas calendar. Save out 24 pieces of candy from each kid's stash. Then add the candy to your advent calendar or tape the candy to your family calendar. The kids get one piece every day in December as they countdown to Christmas Eve.

#1: Darky Apples

We all know that an apple a day keeps the doctor away and dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants , so pairing apples with dark chocolate makes a hauntingly heart-healthy, tooth-friendly treat!

  1. Remove the apple stems and insert the sticks into the top of the apples.
  2. Melt the dark chocolate baking chips in a double boiler (insert a metal bowl into a pot of boiling water).
  3. When the chocolate has melted, slowly rotate each apple in the chocolate until all sides are covered.
  4. Place on a tray lined with parchment or wax paper and let cool in the fridge until the chocolate hardens around the apple.
