    Brown the ground turkey in a skillet. Transfer meat to the slow cooker. Add the remainder of the ingredients to the slow cooker and stir well to combine.

  • My husband tolerates it. My kids? They will only eat it if it’s mild. Thankfully, my Slow Cooker Turkey Chili is really mild. Flavorful, but mild.Now, of course you could add a whole lot more spice to the recipe too and it would be fabulous – but that’s up to you. Or, you could just stir a little extra into your bowl, leaving the batch at large mild. Whatever works.And I’m going to let you in on a little secret. Whenever I make something with ground turkey (or ground meat of any kind) and the meat needs to be browned, I seldom defrost it ahead of time. In fact, I usually pull it out of the freezer and plop it into a hot pan and start cooking. Why? Because it browns up easily from frozen – without the stress of needing to remember to take out the meat the day before.So, here’s how it works: You place the frozen ground meat in the hot pan and let it sizzle for a few minutes. Then flip it over and let it do the same on the other side. Scrap the browned, defrosted bits off and chop them into pieces with the spatula. Then flip again. Continue until all the meat is browned. It takes 5-10 minutes.When it comes to making this, it’s so incredibly simple. You brown the meat, mix the ingredients in the slow cooker and set it to low … that’s all. Eight hours later, you have a crock full of fabulous chili.

Recipe Summary

  • 1 ½ teaspoons olive oil
  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 (28 ounce) can canned crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (16 ounce) can canned kidney beans - drained, rinsed, and mashed
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper

Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat. Place turkey in the pot, and cook until evenly brown. Stir in onion, and cook until tender.

Pour water into the pot. Mix in tomatoes, kidney beans, and garlic. Season chili powder, paprika, oregano, cayenne pepper, cumin, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer 30 minutes.

Made with the following changes: Used chicken broth instead of beer (gluten free and carb friendly) Used spices: 2 Tbsp Chili Powder 1/2 Tbsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander 1/2 tsp dried oregano 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes Easy and tasty. Family approved. Will add to monthly rotation.

Not sure I like the flavor with the beer and it could use a little more kick in the flavor. But overall a good recipe.

Needs some tomato paste so it can get a little thicker. Other than that, it's really good with some cornbread. When I don't have the seasoning packet I add 1 tsp each of cumin, chili powder, and paprika.

This recipe sounds yummy especially on a cold winter's day. I can't wait to try it. Thanks for the hints on what can be substituted for certain ingredients. I have the turkey but think I will use a can of rotel to spice it up as well as the tomatoes. Also, I may do beef or chicken broth instead of beer. If I double the recipe I thought about using two different kinds of beans to give it a little character of it's own. Also, sometimes I cook my chili till thick, scoop it over warm tortilla chips and top it with shredded lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, avocado dip and sour cream for a real Mexican like treat. Any other suggestions would be appreciated from all you great cooks!

Made this chili today. Hubby gives it 5 stars! I altered it just a bit. I did not add the beer or the corn. The reason I didn't add is primarily because I just had Gastric ByPass surgery so I wouldn't be able to eat those 2 items with my restrictions. I did use chili mix. I know smack my hands. because of the previous reviews i mixed 1/4 packet of hot mix and 3/4 regular. that way I had a tad bit of heat. Delicious chili. will make it on a regular basis!

This recipe is amazing. My husband & I make it all the time. The only thing we do different is that we make our own chili seasoning & add cilantro to the pot. Love it!

Made this for Play-off Sunday and let the slow-cooker free up some stove space. I used all the ingredients listed, but I did alter the order a bit: I used 2 Tb oil and sauteed the onions first, then added the garlic (1 min), and then the peppers, sauteing until soft. I then added the chili seasoning (I used HOT, which as I suspected was actually only medium hot, not incendiary), then browned the turkey until cooked through. I then piled it all into the slow cooker along with the remaining ingredients, and cooked on HIGH (not low) for six hours covered, then another hour or so uncovered to thicken (I had considered using masa to thicken it, but apparently forgot about this brilliant idea later). Be sure to use good beer--I sacrificed a Racer 5 (ouch!) because that was all we had on hand it doesn't need to be THAT good, but you can really taste the difference, so don't skimp and use Bud Light. This chili turned out more than respectably, and provided a lot of bang for the buck. Definitely a keeper.

Slow Cooker Turkey Chili

I know that today is the first day of spring but here in Kansas City we’re still fighting off that last bit of winter. To embrace it I threw together a healthy chili to enjoy at lunch. This recipe is designed for the slow cooker but can be done in a sauce pan as well. Just simmer on the stove instead of in the slow cooker. I hope you enjoy!Components:

Ingredients:

Ground Turkey Breast – 5 oz OR Ground Turkey – 4 oz

Garlic Powder – 1/2 teaspoon

Chili Powder – 1/2 to 1 teaspoon

Wash and dice the tomato and green pepper. Turn the slow cooker on to high and add the vegetables.

Heat a small pan over the stove. Add the ground turkey breast and garlic powder. Cook until there is very little pink left adding water for moisture as needed. Add the ground turkey, chili powder, paprika, salt and pepper to the slow cooker.

Let the chili continue to cook on high. After 30-45 minutes you will notice that the tomato is cooking down into a liquid. Stir the ingredients occasionally until the consistency of the tomatoes is smooth. Let the chili simmer for at least an hour after this for flavor. If you let the chili simmer for an extended period of time turn the heat down to low so it doesn’t burn.

Serving Suggestions:

I love this recipe as a lunch. I can quickly throw all the ingredients together when I get home, let it simmer through the evening and then throw it in a tupperware before bed. The flavors really come out when left to sit over night.

Alternate Stovetop Method

To make this Healthy Turkey Chili on the stovetop, you simply cook the turkey and onion in a large pot or dutch oven, and leave them on the stove, instead of transferring them to a slow cooker after they’re cooked. Just dump in all the other ingredients, and simmer for about 30 minutes.

Super easy! And a great alternative if you don’t happen to have a crock-pot, or if you forget to start the recipe in the slow cooker … and suddenly realize dinner needs to be ready in about half an hour (oh yes … I’ve been there myself a time or two!).

Try this classic chili for an easy family dinner … and for parties or tailgates. It even freezes great and is terrific for meal prep!
